Second Parliamentarian has Resigned

by Muna April 23, 2011

Parliamentary representative Khalil Al-Rifai has now resigned after Nasir Hariri.  Al-Rifai represents the Dara province.

I thought the dissent was going to begin within the government - but didn't expect it from a historically powerless Parliament.

Let's watch them fall.  Now what Bashar?

First Syrian Parliamentarian to Resign in Protest to the Assad Attacks

by Muna April 23, 2011

Syrians don't expect their representatives in Parliament to actually represent them.  In fact, the existence of the Parliament is seen as somewhat of a joke.  Elections are rigged, opposition parties don't really exist - & oh, it helps that the Baath has 2/3 of Parliamentary seats automatically reserved for its own party.

So it comes as no surprise that when protests began, noone was writing letters to their representatives to ask for any support, verbal or otherwise.

Christian Woman Loses Son

by John Mak April 22, 2011

Syrian security forces kill a Christian woman's son in an effort to stir up sectarian strife and unrest. At a pro-deomcracy rally she speaks on the microphone stating that her son was killed. The primarily Muslim crowd erupts chanting that "We are all your sons". Chanting it over and over. Syrian security forces have been instructed to kill religious and ethnic minorities to inflame internal conflict.

Bloodiest Friday

by John Mak April 22, 2011

Great Friday (Good Friday) was the bloodiest day in the Syrian revolution's history. Over 112 people were killed, and the numbers keep growing. It's hard to add the numbers up from all the small towns due to poor communication, lack of phone service or internet. But over the next few days we will know eactly how many were killed. For now the number seems to be upwards of 112.

Obama issued a stern warning to Assad that the killing of innocent civilians is "outrageous" and must stop immediately.

Inside Damascus on Great Friday

by John Mak April 22, 2011

An account from inside Damascus was sent us. The names, locations, and identifying information have been altered. This is a first person, eye-witness account from a person who was protesting during Great Friday:

I woke up in the morning on Friday, per my usual routine. Took a bath, read some Quran, took a nap and waited for Friday prayer.

Me and a group of my friends headed over to our local Mosque. Inside the Mosque, something was different. It was electric and buzzing. You could feel the tension. People were on pins and needles. Everyone was waiting to see what the Imam (religious leader) would say during his sermon.

Damascus Sealed Off for Friday

by John Mak April 21, 2011

Our sources inside Syria have confirmed that, in anticipation of Friday protests, the Syrian security forces and army have sealed off all major roads leading into and out of Damascus. No one will be getting in, no one will be getting out. The regime is scared that people from neighboring cities will try to enter and rally with the pro-freedom crowds.

(Dis)Information War in Syria

by John Mak April 21, 2011

The Ministry of Interior now blames violence in Homs and elsewhere on Salafist infiltrators, protesters beg to differ by raising new slogans and renewing their call for Assad’s ouster, just as he set to announce lifting of Emergency laws.
