Eventually my friend confided in me a story that illustrates how the arbitrariness and thoughtlessness of the Syrian regime combines with other social pressures. For a number of years, Yusuf was in love with a girl from his village. When he finally decided to ask her father for permission to marry, her father said no and proceeded to engage his daughter to another man. Yet my friend could not forget his love so easily and continued to see her even though he had been forbidden to do so. Unfortunately, her father was an important man in the internal security services. When he found out that Yusuf was still seeing his daughter, he wrote a false report that landed Yusuf in jail for several days, where he was beaten.

The Obama administration faced renewed pressure Thursday to toughen its stance on Syria, where pro-democracy activists remained defiant ahead of planned nationwide rallies to denounce government brutality against demonstrators.
Three key senators formally called on the White House to break publicly with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and to impose sanctions against members of his government. The call for tougher measures came as European Union diplomats gathered in Paris to discuss similar steps against the Assad regime.

The last few days have produced a series of important quotations regarding Obama foreign policy.
The final line in Ryan Lizza’s New Yorker article on Obama is tops: “One of his advisers described the President’s actions in Libya as ‘leading from behind.’” A similar thought was delivered on the record by the State Department’s Director of Policy Planning, Jacob Sullivan. Discussing military activities in Libya, he said the United States “stands ready to play perhaps the central supporting role in this mission…”
