International journalist gets rare access to the Syrian people

A foreign journalist snuck into Syria and was able to communicate with the people of Syria and the defecting soldiers of Syria. Foreign journalists are unable to travel and report freely inside the country, but Ian Pannell secretly crossed the border near the Turkish village of Guvecci. He heard from Syrian soldiers who say they have been ordered to fire on civilians. Friend tells story of wife thrown off balcony -- "don't send condolences, call a congressman"

Syrian Revolution: The most unflinchingly non-violent revolution in history?

Not enough is being made of how radical the Syrian Revolution has been. It is easy to talk about nonviolence and civil disobedience as a noble and strategic tactic for liberation struggles in the contemporary world; it is quite another matter altogether to live up to such an ideal. In fact, it is still hard for me to even imagine how the beautiful people of my motherland are so uncompromisingly maintaining their stance on nonviolent resistance.
